Natalislang nació en 1987 en el sur de Chile, en un hermoso pueblito llamado Puerto Natales, estratégicamente ubicado a 150 Km. del parque nacional Torres del Paine, razón por la cual, desde mediados del siglo XX, poco a poco comenzaron a llegar visitantes de todo el mundo atraídos por las bellezas naturales.
Natalislang was born in 1987 in a beautiful little town called Puerto Natales in the south of Chile. Natales is strategically located at 150 Km from the Torres del Paine National Park. This is why, by the middle of the 20th century, it started to receive visitors from all over the world attracted by its natural wonders.
El interés crecía cada vez más y es así como un pequeño instituto de inglés llamado Natalis Language Centre se transforma poco a poco en una pequeña escuela de español que crecía de una forma lenta, pero segura.
This tendency grew with time and so it did a little English institute called Natalis Language Centre which became a small Spanish school growing at a slow but steady pace.
Para ser sincera la historia tiene algo que para mí siempre tendrá un valor especial.
To be honest, this story has something that will always have a special place in my heart.
Siempre me ha gustado que mis clases sean efectivas, y en esa época, a menudo invitaba a extranjeros angloparlantes para que mis alumnos tuvieran la oportunidad de practicar el inglés con ellos. Cuando un adulto estudia por primera vez un idioma diferente al materno, uno de los mayores obstáculos que debe superar es la timidez que siente al enfrentarse con alguien que él supone habla perfectamente el idioma que está aprendiendo y esas eran mis razones para invitar a diferentes turistas que estaban de paso por Puerto Natales. En cada situación hubo anécdotas diferentes que siempre fueron divertidas, porque a ellos les parecía muy extraño lo que yo les pedía, pero al final del día todos habíamos pasado una velada muy entretenida y en mi interior pensaba que mis alumnos habían avanzado un poco más en su aprendizaje.
I have always liked that my classes were effective. By that time I used to invite English-speaking foreigners so my students had a chance to practice English with them.
When an adult studies another language for the first time, one of the biggest problems he/she must overcome is the shyness when facing someone who speaks perfectly the language that is being learnt.
Those were my reasons to invite different tourists passing by Puerto Natales to my English lessons. There were multiple funny anecdotes in each situation because of my petition to the travelers, but by the end of the day we all had a wonderful time together and I felt that my students had improved their language level.
En el verano no tenía muchos alumnos, porque en Chile tenemos vacaciones y no hay clases en los colegios y esto a mí me preocupaba, ya que tenía que velar por la educación de mi hijo mayor. Un buen día, conversando con mi amigo inglés Richard Newton, éste me propone la idea de iniciar clases de español para extranjeros.
Summer means holiday in Chile. During this time the public schools were closed and I had a few students only. I was really worried because I had to deal with my eldest son’s education. A good day, talking with a Englishman friend of mine, Richard Newton, he came up with the idea to start a Spanish course for foreigners.
Al principio, la idea me pareció una locura, al igual que a la gente dedicada al turismo de la región con quienes lo conversé. Decían: “Mirtha, ellos vienen a conocer. A nadie le va a interesar estudiar”, pero la Mirtha es porfiada, y después de pensar un poco me dije: “No hay peor diligencia que la que no se hace”, además de no tener nada que perder y sí mucho que ganar, así que decidí intentarlo.
At the beginning, I thought that this idea was crazy and so it did all the people related to Natales’ tourism industry I spoke with. They said: “Mirtha, they just come to meet the place. Nobody would be interested in study”. But Mirtha is a stubborn woman and after much thought I said to myself: “There is nothing worst than doing nothing”. Besides I had nothing to lose and a lot to win so I decided to give it a try.
Encargué a una librería en Santiago dos cursos de español y más tarde, un amigo llamado Jovito….. de CONAF (Corporación Nacional Forestal), me regaló otro curso que un mochilero le dio porque llevaba mucho peso. Tengo que reconocer que éste último fue un aporte increíble para el camino que empezaría a recorrer.
I ordered two Spanish course books to a shop in Santiago. Later on a friend of mine called “Jovito” from CONAF (National Forest Corporation) gave me another course that a backpacker gave him because he was carrying too much weight. I have to admit that this book was an incredible contribution to the journey that I was about to start.
Aprendí mucho de mi lengua materna, y lo mejor de todo es que aprendí mucho de otras culturas. Siempre digo en las capacitaciones, que cuando un profesor no aprende algo nuevo de sus alumnos quiere decir que su clase no fue una buena clase.
I learnt a lot about my mother tongue and the best of all was that I learnt about other cultures too. When training new teachers, I always say to them: “When a teacher doesn’t learn anything new from his/her students, it means that it wasn’t a good class.”
Estamos hablando de una época y un lugar en que la correspondencia aérea, el teléfono y el fax eran los únicos medios de comunicación. Culturalmente, sólo teníamos una biblioteca y las historias de los antiguos.
We are talking about a time and a place where the air mail, telephone and fax were the only means of communication. Culturally, we only had one library and the old people’s stories.
Pasaron algunos años y todo empezó a cambiar ya que la gente que viajaba no disponía de mucho tiempo para quedarse en un mismo lugar. Todos querían conocer lo más que pudieran cuando estaban en un lugar y moverse rápidamente a otro. Bueno, no sé si fue eso o fueron razones personales las que me hicieron mudarme con todos mis bártulos a Santiago y en 1997 llegué a la capital con un poco de temor, porque solamente tenía dinero para sobrevivir 45 días, pero también con mucha fe que lo iba a lograr.
Alter a few years, it all started to change. The travelers did not have much time to stay in one place. They all wanted to know as much as they could and then move to another location. I do not know if it was this or other personal issues that made me move with all my things to Santiago. In 1997 I arrived to the Chilean capital with a little fear, because I had money to survive for 45 days only. But my internal faith told me that I was going to make it in this big city.
Santiago no ha sido fácil y eso yo lo sabía, y también sabía que las clases de inglés no iban a ser mi fuerte, porque en Santiago hay mucha competencia, así que desde un principio comencé a trabajar en clases de español.
Santiago has not being easy and I knew that. I also knew that English lessons were not going to be a strong income because of the business competency. So, I decided to work with Spanish lessons from the beginning.
No es fácil comenzar sin capital, pero siempre he sido agradecida de lo que Dios me da; estoy feliz con la vida que me tocó vivir y muy agradecida de los colaboradores que he tenido a lo largo de todos estos años. Ellos han sido profesionales con las cuales no sólo he compartido momentos agradables, sino también conocimientos que yo no tenía, lo cual agradezco enormemente ya que el saber no ocupa espacio.
It is not easy to start a business without capital, but I have being always grateful for all the things God has given me. I am happy with the life I have to live and very grateful to all the collaborators I have had through the years. They have being very professionals and we have shared grated times together and knowledge I did not have.
Como al parecer me gustan los desafíos y siempre buscaré horizontes nuevos, en el año 2006 nació la oficina en Valparaíso la que creo y tengo fe que me dará satisfacciones. No sé si económicamente será un éxito, pero el sólo hecho de tener que visitar constantemente Valparaíso, eso ya es un gran premio.
Since I like challenges, I am always looking for new horizons. Natalislang Valparaiso was born in 2006 and I strongly believe that this office will prove to be a satisfactory experience. I do not know if this would represent an economic success, but the mere fact of visiting Valparaiso means more than a lot to me.
En mi mente tengo otros proyectos pero son sólo proyectos como los anteriores y, cuando se hagan realidad, los iré agregando poco a poco, paso a paso.
Now, I have other projects in my mind. But like I said, they are only projects, just like the others. When they become a reality, I will add them little by little, step by step.
